Life in the Years - Fighting Alzheimer's With Music
A Unique New National Initiative

Musicians for a Cause and the Moore Center have launched Life in the Years, an innovative new grassroots initiative to help fight Alzheimer's disease with music and create awareness for our nation's elderly.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, Alzheimer's disease is the 6th leading cause of death in the United States and it accounts for 34% of all Medicare spending. Its effect on families and our society is devastating and there is no cure. While music can't cure Alzheimer's, it can certainly bring attention to its impact on families and help provide the financial support needed for care and research.

According to Paul S. Boynton, President and CEO of the Moore Center, the instances of Alzheimer's are growing among the base of seniors who are cared for under the agency's Moore Options for Seniors program. "More than 50% of our clients are affected by Alzheimer's or other forms of dementia and we felt compelled to try to help on a larger scale," said Boynton. Toward that end, the Moore Center has teamed with Musicians for a Cause to create a music-based awareness campaign called Life in the Years to help fight Alzheimer's on a national level.

Musicians for a Cause has developed the most comprehensive music compilation in the world focused on bringing awareness, love, compassion, and a touch of humor to the issues around aging. The best songs were solicited from over 350,000 talented songwriters through an international competition and 37 artists were selected to share touching stories about their loved ones. Life in the Years is being promoted and sold nationally and the proceeds will help fight Alzheimer's disease.

This unique compilation of songs includes a touching ballad from Natalie Merchant and a beautiful duet by Livingston Taylor with Carly Simon. It also includes songs from former Allman Brothers member Johnny Neel, Emmy Award TV writer-turned-songwriter Tracy Newman, and many independent singer/songwriters who have won national acclaim. All the artists involved have also shared the personal stories of inspiration behind their songs. One of the songs, From His Window, a song about Alzheimer's, has been made into a music video, which can be found at www.lifintheyears.org.

"This is the first effort of its kind to incorporate music into a mainstream fundraising and awareness platform. Our elderly deserve the visibility and we hope this initiative helps shed some light on the issues they face," said Dave Bastien, founder of Musicians for a Cause." Musicians for a Cause founder Dave Bastien has been awarded the Good Samaritan Award in the category of Media and the Arts by the Pastoral Counseling Services of New Hampshire. The state-wide award is in recognition of his service in support of nonprofit organizations throughout New Hampshire. PCS states, “The Good Samaritan Award is designed to honor individuals who have gone above and beyond what is expected at some personal risk for the good of others.”

The award is given to one recipient in each of the five categories: Business and Industry, Media and the Arts, Medicine and Healing, Religion, and Education. Pastoral Counseling Services has an open nomination policy for the award and receives many nominations for each category so the criteria required for recipients is very selective.

Joyce Herndon of PCS states, “Recipients of the award must unselfishly improve the community in New Hampshire.” In addition, recipients are required to “go the extra mile in order to improve the life of others,” make a commitment to helping the community become a better place to live and work, have compassion, and be courageous in their acts and deeds.

Honored along with Bastien are Nick Soggu for business and industry; Richard Boulanger for medicine and healing; Monsignor John Quinn for religion and Bob Baines for education.

Each year approximately 400 guests attend the awards banquet and the funds raised during the event are used to cover the cost of counseling for those who cannot afford it. Pastoral Counseling Services aim is to help all of those in need without regards to financial status.
